IN CHEMISTRY
Dangling bonds
  • hybrid sp3 orbitals]].
  • A configuration-coordinate diagram of the valence band, conduction band and dangling bond energy band in silicon. The arrows indicate the relaxation energies.
  • Schematic depiction of a semiconductor surface with the (001) plane exposed. The surface atoms will reorganize to pair dangling bonds, lowering the overall energy but creating some surface strain. In general, reorganization of surface atoms can shift several layers of atoms near the surface from their original position.

POINTER THAT DOES NOT POINT TO A VALID OBJECT
Dangling reference; Wild pointer; Dangling Reference; Dangling pointers; Wild reference; Use after free; Use-after-free; Use After Free
<programming> A reference that doesn't actually lead anywhere. In C and some other languages, a pointer that doesn't actually point at anything valid. Usually this happens because it formerly pointed to something that has moved or disappeared, e.g. a heap-allocated block which has been freed and reused. Used as jargon in a generalisation of its technical meaning; for example, a local phone number for a person who has since moved is a dangling pointer. [Jargon File]

Dangling reference; Wild pointer; Dangling Reference; Dangling pointers; Wild reference; Use after free; Use-after-free; Use After Free
Dangling pointers and wild pointers in computer programming are pointers that do not point to a valid object of the appropriate type. These are special cases of memory safety violations.
dangling participle
TYPE OF MISPLACED GRAMMATICAL PHRASE
Dangling participle; Misplaced modifier; Hanging participle; Dangling modifiers
¦ noun Grammar a participle intended to modify a noun which is not actually present in the text.
Usage
A dangling participle is one which is left 'hanging' because it does not relate to the noun it should. For example, in arriving at the station, the sun came out, the word arriving is a dangling participle, because the sentence reads grammatically as if it is the sun (the subject of the sentence) which is arriving. This is regarded as incorrect in standard English.

Dangling bond

In chemistry, a dangling bond is an unsatisfied valence on an immobilized atom. An atom with a dangling bond is also referred to as an immobilized free radical or an immobilized radical, a reference to its structural and chemical similarity to a free radical.

When speaking of a dangling bond, one is generally referring to the state described above, containing one electron and thus leading to a neutrally charged atom. There are also dangling bond defects containing two or no electrons. These are negatively and positively charged respectively. Dangling bonds with two electrons have an energy close to the valence band of the material and those with none have an energy that is closer to the conduction band.
